On Wednesday we asked one question: what do people already trust you to do?

A lot of you responded. Almost nobody named a talent.

Most of you named a behavior, and often the same one.

Carrie wrote, ‘Show up.’ Rebecca wrote the same thing with an exclamation mark. Terese is trusted to show up, be present, and overthink everything. Janine sent hers as a list: show up, do the hard things, make the difficult calls, make sure their needs are met. Tina, Milena, Deborah, Judith, Lise, and Ralph all sent a version of the same sentence about keeping their word.

Not one person said they were trusted for being the smartest in the room.

Then a second thing started appearing, usually tacked on after the answer.

Everyone in Cie’s life, including people in her business, trusts her to take care of them. She wrote that it gets old. Jennifer shows up even when she is visibly not okay, and does not want to be the nurturer anymore. Myssah is trusted with houses, pets, and so much more, but not with the thing she is actually best at. Deb is trusted to always be the strong one.

Reliability is a real gift. It is also the easiest one for other people to stop noticing.

So here is the other side, because one of you sent it. Sharon had stepped back from her work at the start of the year and was finding it hard to begin again. Then a former client got in touch and told her she was the only person who could help with a particular thing. She wrote that it was exactly the message she needed to restore her belief in herself.

Same trust. Opposite feeling. The difference is whether it ever comes back to you.

August is a good month for that question. Two eclipses, and both of them are interested in what you are carrying and whether you should still be the one carrying it.
